Healthy and Well in Rijnhuizen

A Participatory Action Research into healthy living in the Rijnhuizen neighborhood in Nieuwegein.

Project team

Situation

Rijnhuizen is a new residential area in Nieuwegein, situated along the Merwedekanaal and less than 15 minutes from the city of Utrecht. Fort Jutphaas and Castle Rijnhuizen are the gems of this area. Originally an industrial estate, it is being transformed into a mixed residential area, with a focus on living and lifestyle.  The neighborhood covers 80 hectares and has space for approximately 2,500 homes, accommodating around 4,100 residents. The ratio of houses to apartments is 1 to 3. The housing options include social rental homes, private sector rental homes, and primarily owner-occupied homes. Some office spaces will remain in the neighborhood; about 20% of Rijnhuizen will be office space in the future, with 80% residential. The transformation of industrial buildings has largely been completed, with some areas still under construction (new construction, not transformation). Currently, there are no healthcare or welfare facilities in Rijnhuizen. This is the focus of the action research.
  • Five surrounding healthcare centers (general practitioners, physiotherapists, psychologists, pharmacists) want to explore what is needed and what residents require;
  • The offerings do not necessarily have to be in a building;
  • There is a desire to investigate innovative solutions that can be implemented.

PAR Design

PAR-goal

To co-create and implement a plan with stakeholders to establish an infrastructure for healthcare and welfare in the Rijnhuizen neighborhood, ensuring that the right care and support are always available.

Outcome

The stakeholders have identified six themes that are important to them when it comes to healthy living in the Rijnhuizen neighborhood.

zes thema's

In the analysis and discussion, we discovered that the themes partially overlap and influence each other. The themes that received the highest priority were ‘Healthy Care’ and ‘Healthy Contacts’. These themes were further developed in focus groups, where participants reflected on the results together, brainstormed about possibilities, and co-created appropriate action plans based on the prioritized ideas and initiatives that are currently being pursued.

Results of healthy care

Various ideas emerged in the focus groups to shape healthy care in terms of location, resources, and parties involved. After prioritization and discussion of these ideas, two topics were further explored by the focus group members: possibilities for physical care and possibilities for digital care in the neighborhood. According to the focus group members, what was needed next was 1) Sharing the outcomes with the neighborhood and gathering needs from more residents on this theme, incorporating those needs into the next steps, and 2) Someone or a small group of people to take the lead in further developing the aspect of care in the neighborhood in close connection with the residents of Rijnhuizen. Raedelijn has explored who would like to take the lead and will now continue to work with this small group on shaping healthy care in Rijnhuizen.

Results of healthy contacts

Many concrete ideas emerged in the focus groups to promote more healthy contacts in the neighborhood. The greatest need was for a physical meeting place in the neighborhood. This place was established in April; a community center in the neighborhood where a casual neighborhood coffee is regularly organized. The members of the neighborhood platform are now exploring together with other residents what needs exist for collective activities and want to develop and pursue this with involved residents.
